Javelin 2020 Virtual Maine Cruise Featuring Mostly 2010 - 2020 Cruises

In 2020 the COVID-19 Pandemic scuttled Javelin's whole season, so being the resourceful Skipper Steve is, he invited the crew on a Virtual Maine Cruise. Over a series of 5 Zoom cocktail hours, the crew was treated to Steve's selected pictures from past cruises as the Virtual Cruised unfolded. Just like any year, there is The Plan, but this year the weather won't change The Plan. Here's the basic crew that was included in the Zoom meetings, plus other sailors we have met along the way who were invited to join the Zoom meeting, particularly when they were included in the Plan.

And, after 5 days of enjoying memories of great cruises past, we added a Javelin 2020 Virtual Cruise Celebration Dinner Menu highlighting typical Javelin meals - most of which are in the pictures below. Here's the link to the Celebration Menu and our virtual crew was invited on the final Friday 7/17/20 Zoom meeting to attend in Javelin attire with their chosen Appetizer from the menu. Steve, Rick, Brian and Jess had on their dress Javelin shirts; Paul, Michael, Karin and Rick had Dark 'N Stormys; Karin and Rick had Condiment Bowls; Micahel had Lobsters planned for dinner as did Paul who also had Steamers, and Rick & Sandy were grilling Steak & Mashed Potatoes. At Jess, Michael and Rick then planned Javelin Shortcake for dessert. As Michael noted, "It's the only time I could legally (without telling wife Judy) buy Oreos!

Potts Harbor to Westbrook

Saturday morning Javelin began her return to Westbrook via a 28-hour, 230 mile, non-stop run with our five-man crew standing four-hour watches with six hours off watch. The watches were two-man watches with a new person rotating in every two hours. (I can tell you what watches you stood, if you are interested.) Here is how it unfolded.

One of the "perks" of overnighting at Dolphin Cove Marina at Potts Harbor is that at 0800 every morning they come around to each boat with doughnuts and coffee. We have never enjoyed this benefit because, by 0800, Javelin is always well down the route towards Wentworth. However, this time the skipper slept in, and we received our allocation of goodies to accompany our oatmeal before we got underway.

We cleared the Broad Sound buoy at 0835 and took up a course of 204 degrees magnetic for 116 miles to the Cape Cod Canal. This straight-line course took us past the "P" buoy, 13 miles east of Boon Island, and 17 miles east of the Isles of Shoals. After a chow-mein luncheon, we had the Isles of Shoals abeam about 1330 and encountered a nice westerly breeze that built to about 15 knots, giving us a great sail that continued across half of Massachusetts Bay. By 1630, Cape Ann was abeam, with its lighthouse barely visible 13 miles away on the western horizon.

Dinner was the last tray of Paul's famous lasagna at the 1800 watch-change for Rick, Paul, and Michael, with portions heated in the microwave when Jess and Steve came on watch later. The light on Race Point at the end of Cape Cod was abeam, 8 miles east of us, about 2025 accompanied by a glorious sunset. Running lights, radar, searchlight, life vests with tethers, and warm and dew-resistant clothing, were readied.

Javelin found the eastern entrance of the Cape Cod Canal among all the confusing shore lights at 2245 on a moonless night with the canal current running well in our favor. (A good autopilot and a competent radar watch - plus a searchlight - puts you spot-on every time!) After switching to the other fuel tank, preparing some hot chocolate for the on-watch crew, and making up to 12 knots as we whipped through the well-lit canal, we popped out the western end in good fashion to a flat calm Buzzards Bay and headed west down our usual line of buoys along the north side of Buzzards Bay.

The brightening dawn sky found us traversing the swells in Rhode Island Sound with the lights of the Newport Bridge visible to starboard. At 0530 the sun rose astern, and, by 0600, we had Point Judith abeam and were enjoying a breakfast of oatmeal and coffee. Two hours later, we cleared Watch Hill and rode the last portion of the flood tide through Fishers Island Sound. The current turned against us about 1030 just east of Old Saybrook. Then the crew put the sail cover and dorade covers on and began organizing our gear and cleaning up while Rick made the last sandwiches for lunch. We pulled into the fuel dock at Pilots Point at high noon and were in our slip by 1230. We averaged 8.30 knots for the trip.
