It was a wonderful, fun weekend with warm weather and light, shifty winds on Saturday. 24 boats were on the line with forty years of Alumni represented from '63 through '03 stacked against the '04 - '07 team. The light winds didn't help the heavier alums, and the recent past All Americans did just fine, but in the end the Varsity sailed to victory.
But it was so much fun, no one really cared. Everyone cleaned up nicely for the dinner Saturday evening at the Rowing Club Boathouse on the Connecticut. A brief downpour even had the courtesy to stop as we gathered on the deck overlooking the river. The season's team awards were presented - including the Yachtsman and Klinger Trophies first awarded in the 60s by their original donors, Rick Van Mell '63 and Brian Klinger '62.
We also recounted stories of how DCYC's Women's Invitational Regattas of the 60's enabled women to skipper in organized Intercollegiate Sailing for the first time.
Sunday dawned cloudy and cooler, but gradually gave way to a sunny day for the last three races. Everyone departed with smiles on their faces, having renewed old acquaintances, made new ones, and looking forward to Alumni Regattas to come.
